Essaouira weather in January
Essaouira in January enjoys mild and pleasant weather, making it an ideal escape from colder climates. Daytime temperatures typically range between 15-20°C (59-68°F), with plenty of sunshine and occasional light breezes from the Atlantic Ocean (the wind is a lot calmer this time of year compared to the summer months).
While the evenings can be cooler, dropping to around 8-10°C (46-50°F), a light jacket is usually enough to stay comfortable whilst out and about. Although with houses that aren’t insulated for the cold and no double glazing or central heating, the evenings can feel rather chilly in traditional riad accommodations. Your accommodation hosts will provide blankets and a heater to keep you warm at night and some light a fire in the evening.

There is a higher chance of rain at this time of year, although very occasional, and the weather can be rather interchangeable. Wearing layers is key; one day will be calm with brilliant blue skies, the next day overcast and windy, the next day sunny and windy… you get the idea. Just be prepared. Although we can guarantee it will be much warmer and brighter than London in January.
The weather in January and February are very similar, so if you’re thinking of pushing your Essaouira trip back a month in the hope of slightly warmer weather, don’t. April is really when the temperatures warm enough for some days lounging by the pool or on the beach.
Is Essaouira quiet in January?
Essaouira is relatively quiet in January compared to the busier summer months of July and August. December and January in Essaouira is very much the off-season for tourism, meaning you can explore the town’s medina, beaches, and port without the large crowds typically seen during peak periods.
The slower pace allows for a more tranquil experience, whether you’re shopping in the souks, enjoying fresh seafood at local restaurants, or simply soaking in the laid-back ambiance of this coastal town.
While it’s calm, you’ll still find the city’s signature liveliness in the form of local markets (we recommend visiting either Had Draa market or Ida Ougourd market), artisans at work, and ad hoc Gnawa music performances, offering an authentic and peaceful retreat.

Is the water warm enough for swimming?
This is the Atlantic Ocean, so even in the height of the hot summer months the sea feels cold. The only difference is that in the summer months, the sea is a refreshing dip to cool off. Whereas in the winter months, you don’t really feel the need to cool off.
The water in Essaouira is generally too cold for swimming in January, with sea temperatures averaging around 16-18°C (61-64°F). While hardy swimmers or those accustomed to colder water might take a quick dip, most visitors find the ocean better suited for water sports like kite surfing or windsurfing at this time of year, thanks to the steady winds.
For those looking to enjoy Essaouira beach, relaxing walks along the shoreline offer the perfect alternative. The Diabat to Essaouira walk along the beach is particularly beautiful at this time of year as the beaches are quiet.

Is January a good time to visit Essaouira?
If you’re looking for a winter-sun getaway to lounge by the pool sunbathing with a book, Essaouira in January isn’t for you. It just isn’t quite warm enough. But if you want to kick off the new year with a dose of Vitamin D and a a relaxed and crowd-free getaway, then January is a brilliant time to visit Essaouira.
Imagine starting the new year with sunny days, peaceful beach walks, and the charm of a medina that feels like it’s all yours to explore. The mild weather is perfect for strolling, sipping mint tea in outdoor cafes, or even trying your hand at surfing if you’re feeling adventurous.
While the ocean might be a bit too brisk for swimming, the fresh sea air and laid-back vibe are just the ticket for recharging after Christmas and easing into the new year.
